Origins and Updates

In March 2020, when masks were flying off the shelves and nearly impossible to find, the CDC advised people to 'wear a bandana.' Understanding the critical importance of Personal Protective Equipment for healthcare workers, my sister and I knew something must be done to help alleviate the dilemma we all faced. At that moment, we saw an opportunity to do better, so we started a Facebook group called 'Better Than Your Bandana,' with the goal of creating masks that were, as the name suggests, much better than a bandana. Initially, the operation was entirely donation-based and we welcomed any and all who needed a free, well-made mask.

After spending two weeks watching and assisting my sister as she sewed, I decided to try sewing a mask myself. The picture above shows the very first piece I've ever sewn entirely on my own. Shortly after, my mom gifted me a sewing machine and I took over the operation.

Over the course of a few years, as the demand for masks dwindled, I had to pivot. I joined a ton of sewing groups online and made friends with some of the loveliest people. In fact, most of the fabric and hardware I use is sourced from other small, female owned businesses in the country, including the women I formed relationships with during the pandemic. So not only are you supporting my small business, you're supporting theirs.

In short, what started as a simple idea quickly grew into a supportive community of people I call the #BTYBFAM and Better Than Your Bandana naturally evolved into the business I now proudly own and run.

To my surprise and delight, Better Than Your Bandana was voted Gold for the best locally made product on the peninsula in Coastal Virginia Magazine's 2024 Reader's Choice Awards. The winners were determined through an open online voting process on the magazine’s website, where nearly 250,000 verified votes were cast. This honor is a testament to the incredible support of the #BTYBFAM and the hard work that turned a simple idea into a celebrated local brand.

I couldn't do this without the support of my husband, family, friends, and loyal customers. I am overwhelmed with gratitude that I get to spend my days creating and designing things to spark joy and inspiration. This is only the beginning and I can't wait to see and share what's next.

With love and joy,

Erin
